I hear some older craft have been converted to Alternators. Is that important? What are other issues with older craft and updated components?

Has technology improved over time that a much a older machine remade is better than when it was new?

I want to buy something solid with as few surprises as possible and with as low as maintenance as possible. Maintenance as in in I am not so much worried about cost but reliability ,few things to go wrong.

If you have an alternator you can carry a couple more item with you since it's lighter.

A generator puts out very little at low RPM while an alternator puts out a lot even at low RPM.

That's about all the advantages except "bragging rights" like "Hey come look at my alternator conversion I just did."

My ship had a Delco Remy Generator. When it got old and quit charging, I replaced it with another just like it. No problem. Simple.
