Oils, grease, etc.

I assume most use Aeroshell 14 for grease. The manual specs Aero Lubriplate grease for the Sprag Clutch-there's more than one version of Lubriplate though. What are some of you using there? Finally on gear oil it says Mil L 2105 b in one place(I think a GL4 equivalent) but in another it specs Ml L 2105 GL5 like Mobilube. From what I read GL5 contains additives that can be corrosive over time to brass/yellow metals but not sure if that's a concern. So what are you using for the tranny gear oil? In the tail rotor/intermediate gearbox it says use engine oil so obviously Aeroshell 100w or 15W50 depending on temp seems logical there.

Better use only lubraplate on that clutch only. very important. also grease it every 15 hours.

That Lubriplate is tricky-many different versions. I had some 630AA I'd had sitting around the shop for 20 years but the Brantly manual spes AERO Lubriplate. Not available in grease cartridges only small tubes commonly(aviall) and cans(hard to come by though you can order it off their site). The Mobil 1 synthetic seems as thin as water and I wonder if there would be less chance of that rear tranny seal leaking with dyno oil. Not sure if the synthetic nature could have an effect on the seals or not but it is pretty thin. Ironicly the only thing I could find that actually say it meets the MIl-l-2105 spec was Coastal 80w90 at Autozone. Only two of the dozen or so quarts they had said so even though they were all the same p/n on the bottle-must have changed the label. I think Lucas dyno 80w90 might be a good choice as well but didn't have the mil spec reference on it. Among the synthetics Autozone also had some Royal Purple that actually said it met the Mil-l-2105 as well. I'd like to get some single viscosity dyno 90w that meets the mil spec but no joy on that so far.

I scooped Lubriplate AERO out of the can and filed one of those cardboard cartridge tubes for a mini-grease-gun.

Bryan, that's how I do it as well.

We used to use Shell Spirax 80w90 gear oil in the Schweizers and MD's. It was one of the recommended oils. It comes in 90 weight as well. It meets MIL-L-2105D specs and can often be obtained at local autoparts stores. This website gives a lot of info on the various ones:

MD has switched to using Mobil SHC 626 in their gearboxes. I believe Schweizer may have as well. In the Hughes 500, if you switch before reaching a certain time limit, it ups the M/R transmission overhaul from 3500 to 4000 hours. It's a commercial product so it doesn't have a MIL-SPEC number but the tech-rep at MD tells me it has yet to be a problem with the FAA. I'm sure it at least meets MIL-L-2105 and could probably get that verified by MD engineering if needed. I've used it enough to know it's fantastic stuff! We used to have problems reaching the overhaul limits on the 500C gearboxes until we switched to the SHC 626. It's usually available through your local oil dealer, same with the Spirax as well.

Well I'm going with the Mobil One Synthetic for now. Hope the tranny seal doesn't leak. Also got 4 cans of Aero Lubriplate in today. That stuff looks like White Crisco like someone mentioned! I'll do the scoop and fill you guys suggest in a mini tube grease gun.

Aeroshell 14 does have somewhat low temperature specs. I saw in another post that Harold did not like it for the thrust bearings as it was too thin in the heat. Does anyone use anything else or just stick with the Aeroshell 14? Also the Aero lubriplate(Crisco look alike) sure is thin stuff for the sprag clutch.
