Starters

I just had to replace my starter and got a Sky Tec HT. It is about 8-10 lbs lighter than the old one and cranks faster. Apparently, there are different types of ring gears which the starter turns that are installed on the Lycoming engine. I have a B-2B and have a ring gear with 149 teeth. However, I know that many of the B-2s have 122 teeth in the ring gear, so be sure to count before you order. Here is the link to Sky Tech

When installing the Sky Tech starter on the B-2B, a piece of the metal baffle plate must be cut out so it will fit around the starter. It must then be re-sealed to ensure proper air flow and cooling.

I too have the SkyTech and it is a big plus in my opinion.

Guys, I'm now having problems with my Lycoming starter and am looking at the sky-tec ones as a replacement. I counted the teeth on the ring gear today and do have 149. Are you still happy with your starter? Anything I should know about before ordering one?

My Sky Tec starter continues to work well. Just be sure to get the "HT" if you order one. Since you will probably have to cut out part of your baffle plate for it to fit, you may want to order some engine baffle material to seal the area.

Ok, I'll look for the baffle material. Where did you pick this up at? I see the Sky Tec 149-12HT is $419 at Aircraft Spruce.

Thanks.
