Homer Bell's Fly-in coming up

Post by skypilotbobby »

Hey all,

I hadn't seen any postings on this forum about Homer's Fly-in so I thought I'd throw one on about it. For all of those who have been there it's a great time and you'll see a ton of helicopters. Go to http://www.kitcopterconsult.com/Annual%20FlyIn.htm for more information. It's a weekend before oshkosh so most people go to Homers and then fly their choppers on up to oshkosh. I hope some of you Brantly guys are able to make it, i'd like to see some different ones up close and talk Brantlys with a few of you. I'm hoping to learn as much as I can about them as I may be purchasing one very soon. Many chopper pilots have said if you are only able to make one helicopter meet during the year, definitely don't miss this one.

Yea, Homer's event is always full of helicopters and good conversations. Definitely one you don't want to miss if you're into helicopters. He usually averages 45-55+ helicopters over the 3-day event. Most of the time guys are flying around too. I'll be there with mine. Just flew it from Oklahoma to Pennsylvania this past weekend. Look me up Bobby.

There were a record number of helicopters there this year ... 64 !!
Weather was great. Some storms went through Sat night, but most of us were done flying by then anyhow. I arrived Thurs afternoon and left Sun morning. I had the only Brantly there. Lots of other types though... MD 500s, Schweizer, RotorWay, Robinson R22 & R44, Huey, Bell 206, Helicycle, Mosquito (?), Enstrom, Bell 47, Safari, and maybe some others. I gave several rides and even some instruction. Ended up with almost 12 hours flying for the weekend.

Ron, once again, thanks for documenting your trip.

Do you know about geotagging? It is a way to have the GPS location imbedded in the EXIF header of your pictures. It's very easy to do. The result allows your trip/route to be viewed on Google Maps, Google Earth, Microsoft Visual Earth, etc. Your pictures will be identified on the map with a small icon at the exact location where the picture was taken. Clicking on the icon brings up the pic.

Below is a link to a trip I made around the neighborhood where I live (Hidden Valley Airpark 5TX0, in Texas). To test the technology I set up my camera to take pictures every 30 seconds (time-lapse function of my Nikon P50 digital compact camera); so there was no effort to insure that the camera was pointing at anything meaningful - it was just a first test of the technology. You do not have to have your camera set up this way. It is just what I chose to do, so that I could just drive around the neighborhood and not have to stop to take pics.

I carried a GPS (see below) with me and made sure the camera clock was accurately sync'ed with the GPS clock. When I returned home I loaded the GPS file on my computer along with the pictures. The software geotagged the pics with the GPS' location at the time the picture was taken. I am using the Pharos Trips and Pics package (~$85). http://www.pharosgps.com/ Although there may be other options, this package worked well and is very affordable.

Here is a great price on the Pharos Trips and Pics package. http://shop.sehorne.net/shop.php?c=002& ... e_GPS_Unit
It includes the geotagging software and a gps about the size of a book of paper matches.

I'll be glad to provide more info, if you are interested.

This is the first I've heard about geotagging, but it sounds interesting. I'll look more into it.

Thanks.
